Co-Abode is a nationwide web-based organization with a vision of
providing a one-stop resource to help single moms expand their economic
opportunities. Co-Abode accomplishes this through several programs,
namely a unique “Single Mothers House Sharing” program that matches
single moms to share a home together. All of Co-Abode’s services are
designed to make parenting a child alone easier, healthier and more
financially secure. The model is helping to redefine the family unit and
the economics of single motherhood.
In
the United States, there are 13 million single mothers raising more than
20 million children alone. The number of families headed by single
mothers has increased 25% since 1990, according to the 2000 US Census.
The correlation between poverty and single-parenting is shockingly high:
forty-five percent of single parent families headed by women live in
poverty. According to Co-Abode, no single government agency or
non-profit organization specifically addresses the unique challenges of
single mothers and their children. Co-Abode is an attempt to address
these needs in one cost-effective and sustainable model. The goal is to
relieve a single mother’s financial and emotional burden, allowing her
to participate more fully in society and the economy.
3GF's 2005 two-year $60,000 investment in Co-Abode provides general operating
support to help the organization establish essential infrastructure and
enhance its web capacity to handle increased volume and offer improved
usability.
