Young Tibetan women in Sichuan, China
Project: Economic Opportunity Initiative Dissemination
Grantee: Global Fund for Women (San Francisco)
Grant Year: 2002
Award duration/amount: 1 year, $20,000 total
The Global Fund for Women (GFW) is an international grantmaking foundation supporting women’s human rights organizations around the world. In 1998 GFW established the Economic Opportunity Initiative (EOI) to strengthen its support to groups working to remove economic barriers to women’s rights and well being, and to improve the rights of women workers coping with changes in the global economy. The EOI represented 172 grants over 3 years, totaling over $1.5M.
GFW is learning a great deal about making grants to create economic opportunity for women; what works and what doesn’t. In this crowded field, knowledge about best-practices has the potential to move the field forward. 3GF’s $20,000 grant helped GFW to document and disseminate the lessons learned from the EOI, and helped produce a print and web-based report capturing key learning to share with the field.
