The Three Guineas Fund made a $10,000 grant to the Women’s Commission to support their work in adapting their successful participatory research model, used in Kosovo, to the needs of adolescent girls in Sierra Leone. This project will identify and promote appropriate services and protection to Sierra Leonean adolescent girls affected by armed conflict, and disseminate lessons learned to a wider audience.

The long and brutal war in Sierra Leone has resulted in massive displacement, and adolescent girls have suffered from conscription, sexual abuse and other atrocities. The Women's Commission will work with war-affected Sierra Leonean adolescent girls and boys to analyze their needs for education, livelihood, health care, and protection. Adolescents will receive training in project goals and research techniques, and will carry out the research with the assistance of Research Advisors.

Founded in 1989, the Women’s Commission gives a voice to the women and children who account for 80 percent of the world’s refugees. The Women's Commission has focused increasing attention on the needs and rights of war-affected adolescents, particularly girls.
