Project: Women in Action
Grantee: The Tides Center
Grant Year: 2000
The Three Guineas Fund awarded $15,000 in general operating support to this
innovative outdoor adventure program for women transitioning from welfare to
work. Through partnerships with welfare-to-work training programs,
Women in
Action (WIA) enhances hard skills (job finding, interviewing, and computer
training) with critical life skills (self-confidence and faith in ability),
through guided outdoor experiences, including hiking, kayaking and ropes
courses. The WIA activities become an integral part of Welfare to Work
training programs, providing a learning environment for women to challenge
themselves and build self-confidence. Although there are other "outdoor
challenge" programs out there, they are quite unavailable to low-income
women. By partnering with Welfare to Work programs, WIA contributes to a
changing vision of the comprehensive nature of effective work-force
transition programs. WIA's growth plan includes expansion to build
partnerships with other Welfare to Work training programs.
